The EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability and Design Concepts for Nanomaterials (PSX 2021 On Demand)

Course Description:
The EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability initiative is one of the principal mechanisms for implementing the EU's Green Deal and Circular Economy Action Plan and outlines the EU's regulatory priorities for the chemical industry until 2030. It will support the industry in considering both safety and sustainability for product research and development. This presentation will introduce the strategy's goals and indicate the areas where its influence is likely to be felt, among them, nanotechnology. Many recent EU-funded research projects are looking specifically at how the principles of safety and sustainability may be applied to nanotechnology across all sectors. One of these, the SbD4Nano project, is investigating how the design of surface functionalization of nanomaterials can reduce the substances' hazard and risk without impacting their function. Another, the SUNSHINE project, is investigating how existing hazard and risk assessment protocols can be applied to multicomponent nanomaterials, also known as nanohybrids, and how safe and sustainable design concepts can be applied to these complex chemicals and the products that use them.
