Course Description:
Recent developments in state-level chemical regulations are presenting serious challenges to consumer product manufacturers and other stakeholders. For example, some regulations, such as the Oregon Toxic-Free Kids Act, may require implementing nonstandard analytical testing methodologies and Quantitative Exposure Assessment (QEA) to evaluate whether chemical exposure is of concern to the consumer. Other states, including Washington and California, are moving toward restricting chemicals on class rather than individual levels, which adds even more complexity. While there has been some action towards streamlining state requirements, exemplified by the IC2 High Priority Chemicals Data System for reporting chemicals in children's products, state adoption of disparate regulatory frameworks appears likely to continue. This session will explore the current and emerging state regulatory landscape and the potential impact on stakeholders as they attempt to meet compliance requirements. The session will use specific case examples that involve customized product sampling, specialized testing approaches, and consumer exposure evaluations to illustrate strategies and recommendations for navigating these regulatory challenges.
