Environmental Justice and Product Stewardship Beyond TSCA (PSX 2022 On Demand)

Course Description:
Environmental justice (EJ) addresses topics relating to groups of people who bear disproportionate shares of negative health and environmental consequences and providing equal access to relevant health and environmental decision-making processes. Although communities adjacent to production facilities remain the focus, the impact of EJ is expanding. While the approaches for incorporating EJ into product stewardship are still emerging, companies are recognizing that responsible stewardship considers EJ issues in processes, practices, and product development. This session will explore the history and recent prioritization of EJ. Then, the speakers will take a deep dive into the impacts of fenceline community exposures under TSCA and of aggregate and cumulative exposures to chemicals and non-chemical stressors on stewardship programs. The session will also explore other facets of EJ and product stewardship, including consideration of EJ goals in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) plans, and wrap up with a look into the future role of product stewards in EJ.
