Course Description:
The European Union Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) is driving change in EU chemicals regulations, including an overhaul of the REACH regulation. The new strategy is a significant change from a reactive to a proactive approach to chemicals management that attempts to prevent hazardous chemicals from being used in products in the first place rather than remove them when they are found to be unsafe. The change in approach also aims to take a more holistic view that not only examines the use of chemicals in products as a single issue but does so alongside life cycle assessment and environmental impact. Under special scrutiny are per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which appear regularly in news headlines, often referred to as 'forever chemicals.' PFAS have been the subject of new restrictions around the world since their addition to the Stockholm convention in 2010, and even more restrictions are in the pipeline for the EU. This presentation will provide an overview of the planned changes to the REACH regulation and discuss some of the significant technical updates in development, focusing on new restrictions to hazardous chemical groups, particularly PFAS. The session will provide insight into further changes that are anticipated and will update attendees on the details and business implications related to coming restrictions on PFAS.
