Incorporating Principles of Green Chemistry in R&D Programs (PSX 2022 On Demand)

Course Description:
As product stewardship programs mature, companies realize the value achieved by aligning product stewardship efforts within business early in chemical research and development (R&D). This proactively mitigates future compliance issues and promotes product sustainability early in the decision-making process. In order to develop greener, more sustainable products, biological and environmental impacts must be considered well before they are developed on a commercial scale. This session will demonstrate how the Sustainable Futures predictive tools created and utilized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) may be leveraged by companies to support hazard and risk evaluation during R&D as part of green chemistry review programs. Presenters will examine how the development of R&D frameworks that include hazards and risk considerations can reduce the generation of hazardous chemicals, improve companies' success in navigating new chemical introductions, and lead to faster, more sustainable product commercialization. The speakers will present examples that illustrate how results from models inform molecular design decisions and promote product sustainability.
